Fever, Seizure, and Croup: The Scariest Moment Of My Life

Oh my, just writing this post makes me tear up. Yesterday was the scariest day of my life.

Ty had a persistent cough for a little over a week that just wasn't going away. It started only at night time, but got worse to where he was coughing during the day as well. He would have coughing spells where he could not catch his breath and would just cough uncontrollably. It was awful. Friday night was when we decided he needed to be seen by a doctor. Ryan was at the fire station, so he and I were texting each other all night. Ty was not sleeping and was making awful noises when he coughed. I even got dressed to take him the the ER, but he calmed down and finally went to sleep, so I held off on taking him in.

When Ryan got home Saturday morning, we decided that I would take him to the Cook's Children's Urgent Care facility near our house. We had gone there before and had great eperiences. We didn't want Leah to sit up there with all the sick kids, so she stayed home with Ryan. So Ty and I got ready and headed out. He started getting really hot before we left, so we knew he had a fever. As we drove there, Ty just looked pitiful. I was hoping the doctors could give us something to make him feel better.

We arrived, got checked in, and went to a seat by ourselves in the corner. Ty was curled up in my arms for about 5 minutes. Then all of a sudden he leaned back, and I thought he was falling asleep. However, I looked down and he was starting to seize. His body went stiff, his eyes rolled back and his body started seizing hard. I was in shock. I just stood up and kept saying, "Oh my God" and "No, no". I didn't know what to do. My boy was hurting in a way that I had never seen and I was terrified. Thankfully a sweet young mom near me got up and ran for help. The man who checked us in ran to me, took Ty out of my arms, and ran to the examination rooms. As he ran in, he started calling out to the doctors and before I knew it people were swarming my boy. They laid him on the bed, put on oxygen, and got IV's. I was still in shock. I was crying and just trying to make sure Ty was okay. He continued to seize on the hospital bed and all I could think of was that my baby was hurting.

"Was he going to stop? Would he be okay after? What was going on? Please God protect my boy!"

The doctors and nurses were excellent! They took incredible care of my boy and his emotional momma. Ty stopped seizing and went straight to sleep. I was able to call Ryan and tell him what happened. He raced up there with Leah and came to be with us. We were told the seizure was a febrile seizure which is caused by a drastic spike in fever. I am so thankful for Ryan's calm hand in situations like this. With his background as a paramedic, it helped me know that everything was going to be okay.

I climbed in bed with Ty and just held him tight. We were there for almost three hours getting fluids, medicine, X-Rays, and observations. They tested him for Croup and Pertussis. He definitely has Croup and the Pertussis results will come back on Monday or Tuesday.

We were finally able to leave with our boy and he was doing great. He no longer had a fever and seemed to be doing okay. We started him on antibiotics Saturday evening and have been giving him lots of extra loving.

Ty is doing great. He is still coughing, but is acting just like his normal crazy self! We are incredibly grateful for the people who took care of Ty and for God's hand of protection over our sweet boy.

Carrie! I am so glad that sweet Ty is okay! That is so scary!! Aaron and Lincoln got Croup last week, but nothing compared to what poor Ty got. Praying he gets better fast!
